Nancy Nowak
Shin splints are common, but that doesn’t mean they’re normal! They’re actually the first warning sign of a hip problem, so don’t ignore them.
Did you know that stability sneakers create shin splints?
 You could be a full-foot-function runner with good form, but if you’re in a stability sneaker that doesn’t allow for foot mobility, you could begin to develop hip dysfunction…feeling it in your – you guessed it -- shins. 

The good news is that shin splints fall into the ache/pain category, which means they can be corrected quickly.

Long story short – Nany recovered quickly. When she came to Jessica, she wasn’t sure she could run a marathon. She has run six – four within one year!

How did Nancy find #RunPainFree? 
Each year we put on our Annual Correction Workshop and Workout for marathoners. Specifically at the end of the summer, when everyone’s pains and injuries are at the high points. We are able to help so many runners doing this, and Nancy, thankfully, was one of them. She didn’t think she could get to me in NYC due to living out on long island. But, she soon found that was a non-factor and with 8 weeks out to the NYC Marathon 2017, we got to work.

 What pain was Nancy experiencing? 
Doctor’s said that they thought she had shin splints, but she never really bought into it. 

At the workshop, Jessica saw her sneakers were wrong, restrictive, and costing her a tons of issues at her hip, that was looping a pattern of dysfunction all over her body and causing pain. 

She had actually iced her shins so much that she freezer burned them! 

She has the scars to prove it. Nancy’s knots are now what Jessica deems, “Nancy knots”. 

She has the most rock formed -in-shape, knots, that Jessica has ever seen. 

She was in stability sneakers, AND orthotics. 

And if you know #runpainfree, you know these are 2 of the WORST things a runner can do to themselves. Her pain was in her shins, but her problems was her hips, foot use, foot function, and IT Band restriction of the entire pattern that sets off push off.

 What is Nancy doing, currently? 
Nancy is currently, embracing her 50th Year!! Supporting her team of injured runners, as she does constantly! And still correcting her feet! In Berlin, she had a set back in some ankle pain, and after Jessica’s assessment and the image from the sports doctor, it was confirmed a small tear in her Anterior Tibialis. The Anterior Tibialis is a Muscle that turns into a tendon. It’s along the outer shin that gets a TON of use for runners, and it comes down to the front of the ankle (ankle flexion) turning into the tendon (tendons attach muscle to bone).  

This is super common for someone that has the feet issues Nancy has, Pronating (weak feet/never used feet thanks to orthotics, running in orthotics, never addressed pronation from her hips which set’s off her entire kinetic chain feet to shoulders. It’s common for a client’s foot to go through some of these and bone adjusting until corrected. In the old days, doctors would break the foot and cast them to force the foot to be in better position. Today we do that through movement, and it’s naturally happening, unlike forced, so you retrain the mechanic as the bone heals, training the whole body who to operate again from scratch, as it adjusts.

The feet are indicators of your hip, if you force the foot to be in any position, you are also then forcing the hips, and therefore the back as well. That will cause SERIOUS back and hip pain. This is why CORRECTION is so important. We fix everything as we go, so that everything is working as it should, any dysfunction is addressed real time, not forced. 

Nancy, is an exceptional woman, and athlete. She lives a life of helping others, putting others before her, but still takes care of herself! Where in most cases, people forget about their goals and dreams, Nancy truly leads by example of being a good human, and still taking care of her own needs. From the first session, she began sharing her correction work with her peers and her facebook group, encouraging them to know better, be educated in their body and to know that pain is not the end all… and then she shows and leads them in all she does and never gives up! Nancy has shown great respect to the #RunPainFree Program, an asset to our team is an understatement! Nancy has done this of no influence other than her own, and it is for that reason we are happy to announce her as a #RunPainFree Ambassador!
